Choosing an airfield here
What drives the choice in this area: where the traffic goes, where you can clear, and what you can land.
Overview
24 airfields serve Panama City and Destin. Northwest Florida Beaches International (KECP) handles the most business aviation traffic, with 32% of the area's business jet movements , followed by Destin Executive and Gulf Shores International / Jack Edwards Field . The area spans the Florida Panhandle coast from Panama City west through Destin into coastal Alabama near Mobile and Gulf Shores, putting fields as far as 108 NM from the area center. Customs access sits on the western edge at Gulf Shores, Mobile, and Fairhope, apart from the busier Florida fields near Panama City and Destin. Terrain is flat and low-lying throughout, so elevation plays little role in planning here. Traffic builds through spring into summer, tied to the Gulf Coast tourist season, then eases back toward winter lows.
Ten of the 24 airfields serving Panama City and Destin handle 97% of the area's business jet movements. Distance is measured from the area center, and runway length is the longest paved surface on the field.
Headline figures cover public airports only. Military and private fields stay in the list below but are excluded from the counts.

Gulf Shores International/Jack Edwards Field (KJKA) and Mobile Regional (KMOB) sit 38 NM apart, while Mobile International (KBFM) is closer still to Gulf Shores at 29 NM. All three carry CBP inspection services on site, alongside H L Sonny Callahan (KCQF), which is 14 NM from KBFM and 15 NM from KJKA. For crews arranging a customs stop in the Panama City and Destin area, this cluster of four inspection points sits on the western side of the area, well apart from the Florida fields near Panama City and Destin proper. Routing choice among the four then comes down to which side of the area the flight is already headed.
Eglin AFB/Destin-Fort Walton Beach (KVPS) holds the longest runway in the Panama City and Destin area at 12,004 ft but logged only 281 business jet movements. The field operates primarily as a shared military and commercial airport, with Eglin Air Force Base as the host tenant and scheduled airline service using the bulk of its capacity. Nearby Northwest Florida Beaches International (KECP) and Destin Executive (KDTS) carry far more business aviation traffic, at 27,261 and 19,673 movements respectively. A dispatcher planning around runway length alone would miss this split; KVPS length does not translate into general aviation availability the way it does at the two civilian fields.
Business jet movements in the Panama City and Destin area ranged from 5,243 in January to a peak of 9,051 in May during 2025, a spread of about 3,800 movements across the year. Six months ran above the annual average of 7,006, spanning March through July plus October, which lines up with the Gulf Coast spring and summer season. December and January both sit near the annual low. Operators planning ramp and handling needs at Northwest Florida Beaches International (KECP) or Destin Executive (KDTS), the two busiest fields, should size expectations to the May peak rather than the annual average.
Florala Municipal (0J4) sits at 314 ft, the highest elevation among airfields in the Panama City and Destin area, though it is a small public field with a 3,197 ft runway and 786 annual business jet movements. Most of the area traffic runs through low-elevation coastal fields instead: Northwest Florida Beaches International (KECP) sits at 69 ft and Destin Executive (KDTS) at 23 ft. The elevation spread across the area is modest compared to mountain regions, so density altitude is a minor factor here. Florala's runway length, not its elevation, is what actually constrains which aircraft can use it.
Northwest Florida Beaches International (KECP) accounts for 32% of business jet movements in the Panama City and Destin area, with Destin Executive (KDTS) close behind at 19,673 annual movements. Together these two fields, both towered and stocked with Jet A, handle the majority of area traffic within 22 NM of the area center. The remaining volume spreads thinly across 22 other airfields, several logging fewer than 500 annual movements. For a dispatcher weighing ramp space or slot availability, the practical choice set narrows quickly to KECP and KDTS, with Gulf Shores International/Jack Edwards Field (KJKA) as the next largest at 11,460 movements.
