Operating constraints

Access

Transient alert service is provided at Duke Field by Eglin AFB (KVPS) and is only available for approved 7th Special Forces Group missions and local base-assigned aircraft deployment missions. TACC or units supporting transient missions must coordinate the PPR request seven days in advance of the arrival date to ensure use of Duke Field. Units supporting 7th Special Forces Group missions must bring a crew chief for local round-robin flights. Transient aircraft must use follow-me service to parking. Transient aircraft require airfield manager approval when transient alert is unavailable. Transient alert will not support aircraft at KEGI that use KVPS as the initial arrival location. Transient parking rows 9 and 11 are restricted to transient aircraft only. Row 15 is reserved for C-130 and C-17 aircraft only. Fleet service is unavailable.

Customs, agriculture, and immigration service is limited, with no resident customs agent. Service is available only to base-assigned aircraft and approved 7th Special Forces Group missions, and 48-hour prior notice is required. All other aircraft must clear customs before arrival.

Runway 36 approach lighting system is nonstandard, with only high-intensity runway lights, threshold lights, pre-threshold lights, and terminal bar lights available. Runway 180 and runway 360 landing zone have a nonstandard airfield marking pattern light configuration; the flashing strobe light is not on centerline and is offset 30 feet to the left at each end. Runway 18 PAPI reference point is not coincidental with the ILS reference point.

Taxiway D northeast of the apex is limited to CV-22 aircraft due to taxiway lateral obstacle clearance. The hot pit fuel lanes east of the apex are closed to all aircraft due to taxiway lateral obstacle clearance.

Weight restrictions

Use is restricted to official business only. Practice approach and touch-and-go operations are restricted to 919th Special Operations Wing, 492nd Special Operations Wing, 96th Test Wing, 33rd Fighter Wing, and AFSOC-assigned aircraft only. Local aircraft requiring passenger pickup and/or drop-off at AM operations require prior coordination with airfield management. Taxi training for base-assigned aircraft must be accomplished on taxiway D east, taxiway F east, and vertical land north and south, east of the assault landing zone. No C-5 aircraft are permitted on taxiway A north of the main ramp. Taxiways D east and F have weight restrictions for C-17 aircraft; see the airfield survey and restriction report and contact airfield management. CDDAR service is limited and based out of KVPS. Transient aircrew supporting 7th Special Forces Group airborne operations must obtain a local area range orientation briefing by contacting 7th Special Forces Group S3 Air Operations by phone. The landing zone is restricted for use by 919th Special Operations Wing, 492nd Special Operations Wing, 96th Test Wing, and AFSOC-assigned aircraft only. No daytime visual landing zone marker panels are available on the landing zone. 180-degree turns on runway 180/360 landing zone are limited to U-28, PC-12, C-145, C-146, and C-208 aircraft. 180-degree turns are unauthorized on runway 18/36.

Runway notes

Runway 18/36 has nonstandard high-intensity runway edge lights located 75 feet from the outside edge stripe.

Runway 18 and runway 36 overrun surfaces are asphalt.

Emergency arresting systems

Arresting device: Type-H BAK-12B(B), located 1,260 feet from the threshold.

Ditches located approximately 1,260 feet from the landing threshold on each side of the runway, adjacent to the BAK-12 arresting gear and 35 feet from the runway edge lines, present a hazardous condition if directional control is lost during the takeoff or landing phase of flight.

Runway 18/36 arresting gear requires prior notice; contact the tower. Expect a takeoff delay of up to 30 seconds for the cable to raise. The departure-end arresting gear is raised by the tower when fighter aircraft are in the pattern. Expect a no-notice runway closure after BAK-12 engagement, lasting up to two hours. The standard arresting gear configuration has both ends in the down position. Arresting gear is unavailable, out of service, outside published hours, during weekends, and on national holidays, and is not inspected or certified during those times.

Environmental

Airfield mowing season runs March through November. Expect increased bird activity in the vicinity of mowers operating on the airfield.

Expect no-notice closure of Duke Field airspace for special mission testing. Standard USAF restrictions apply. Contact base operations during normal operating hours.

Weather operations run 1400-0600Z++. Remote briefing is available from the 96th Weather Squadron at Eglin AFB by phone. Airfield weather is maintained by an AN/FMQ-19 ASOS, augmented 1400-0600Z++ on weekdays and automated 0600-1400Z++ Monday through Friday and continuously on weekends and holidays. Airfield visibility is restricted to 1/8 statute mile to the southwest and 1/4 statute mile west through northwest due to main base structures, with maximum surface visibility marked at 1 statute mile to the southeast. Night cloud cover viewing is restricted due to surface lighting.

Expect a high volume of military training aircraft near the CEW VORTAC and in the vicinity of Bob Sikes Airport. Unlighted obstacles are present on the airfield. Due to a lack of visual reference during night VFR operations, pilot efforts to maintain altitude by visual means may be unreliable. The north end has a nonstandard overrun measuring 554 feet by 150 feet, and the south end has a nonstandard overrun measuring 556 feet by 150 feet. Extensive assault landing zone and night vision device training is in effect on weekdays.

Mandatory signs at taxiways C, D, E, and F are improperly sited, located 60 feet from the taxiway edge.

Presair, oil, LOX, and soap/JOAP fluids are unavailable.

ARFF condition for Duke Field is Optimum Level of Service for categories 1-2 and Reduced Level of Service for categories 3-6, with 7,600 gallons available.

PMSV Metro communications frequency is 377.625. No service is available outside airfield operating hours; contact command post.

Parking row 9 is restricted to C-208 aircraft only.

Use caution for unmanned aircraft system operations in the vicinity of Duke Field.
