Overview
Moody AFB (KVAD) is a towered military installation near Valdosta, Georgia, supporting Air Force and associated wing operations with two paved runways capable of handling large military airframes. Civilian and transient traffic through this field is limited, reflecting its private use designation and the extensive operational restrictions tied to active flying training, arresting gear configurations, and bird hazard management year-round. According to FAA TFMSC data, cross-border business aviation traffic recorded at KVAD in 2025 remained low, consistent with a facility oriented primarily toward military mission support rather than general aviation throughput.
Moody AFB Airport has two paved runways. The longest, 01R/19L, is 9,300 ft long and 150 ft wide, with a concrete surface.

Moody AFB Airport has published operating constraints in six categories: access, runway notes, emergency arresting systems, noise procedures, environmental and other notes.
Prior permission is issued up to five days before arrival, with a minimum 24-hour notice required. The permission is valid for plus or minus one hour of the approved time. Coordination outside the approved time block must be made by phone, or the prior permission number will be considered cancelled.
Transient aircraft, except flight check, lifeguard, or emergency arrivals, are not authorized to conduct practice approaches during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, due to high volume of local air traffic. Transient IFR aircraft arriving or departing can expect delays when restricted area R3008 is active; contact 23rd Wing scheduling for deconfliction. Prior permission is required for all transient aircraft.
Transient aircraft are limited to one local flight. For prior permission, contact base operations; during non-operating hours, contact the standby line. Transient VIP aircraft should contact the command post 30 minutes prior to estimated time of arrival.
The assault zone is restricted to 347th Rescue Wing C-130 aircraft only. C-5 and C-17 aircraft are restricted to low approach or full-stop landing only. Transient parking is limited.
For clearance delivery, contact base operations. When approach control is closed, contact Jacksonville Center.
The forward deck landing position is restricted to 23rd Wing aircraft only, unless prior permission is coordinated through the operations support squadron.
All runway threshold lighting and the midpoint 70-foot marker have been removed. Airfield lighting is intermittent one hour after official sunset until airfield closure, due to night vision device training on the field. On runway 01R/19L, the PAPI and ILS glideslope are not coincidental.
Transient departures with rapid climb should use extreme caution and maintain at or below 1300 feet MSL until the departure end. The overhead traffic pattern at 1800 feet is in continuous use. Simultaneous operations to runway 19 or 01 are in use when restricted area R3008 is active. A 130-foot AGL unlighted antenna is located 3.5 nautical miles due south of runway 01R.
Runway 01R/19L has non-standard runway markings, with an assault strip shown.
Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command fighter aircraft can expect reduced runway separation: 3000 feet for similar-type aircraft during the day, and 6000 feet for dissimilar-type aircraft or at night. Transient aircraft must notify the tower on initial contact if reduced runway separation is not desired.
On runway 01L/19R, the first 1000 feet is concrete. The middle 6000 feet has a 75-foot-wide concrete center section, with outer sides consisting of 37.5-foot-wide asphalt surfaces.
Height Group 4 aircraft, including the A300, B-1, B-747/767/777, DC/KC-10, C-5, E-4, and VC-25, effective September 18, 2009, have a wheel crossing height of 17 feet on all runway 19 ILS procedures.
KC-10 aircraft are not authorized to conduct 180-degree turns on any runway surface.
Landing zone markings are applied to runways 01R/19L and 01L/19R. The landing zone is limited to 23rd Wing C-130 aircraft only.
Mandatory signage for runway 01L/19R is located on taxiways E, F, G west, and A east, on the right-hand side. Runway hold signs are not collocated with the VFR hold position markings at several runway/taxiway intersections, including runway 01L/19R with taxiways B west, A west, B east, and A east, and runway 01R/19L with taxiways B east and A east.

Birds are prominent year-round, with the Bird Watch Condition changing frequently. Airfield operations or the Supervisor of Flying sets the condition, which aircrews can monitor via ATIS or by contacting the supervisor or airfield operations directly. No comment is given on ATIS when the condition is low; expect delays and full-stop landings when the condition is severe.
Heavy concentrations of cattle egrets are likely in July and August, with a Phase II bird migratory period from October 1 to February 28. Peak bird activity occurs within one hour of sunrise and sunset. Heavy concentrations of cattle egrets occur in the vicinity of the airfield from June through August, with the Bird Watch Condition changing frequently.
Airfield lighting operates dusk to dawn, becoming intermittent one hour after official sunset until airfield closure, due to night vision goggle training conducted on the airfield.

Moody AFB (KVAD) lists both 100LL and Jet A fuel types in its records, but this is a military installation with a private use type. Customs are performed for military personnel and assets only, and transient aircraft operations are subject to prior permission requirements. Civilian dispatchers should not assume routine access to fuel services without coordination through base operations.
Moody AFB (KVAD) has two paved runways: 01R/19L at 9,300 feet by 150 feet on concrete, and 01L/19R at 8,002 feet by 150 feet on a mixed concrete and asphalt surface. Both runways are equipped with arresting gear systems. The airfield also uses non-standard runway markings on 01R/19L, with an assault strip shown.
No, Moody AFB (KVAD) requires prior permission for transient aircraft, issued up to five days before arrival with a minimum 24-hour notice. Transient aircraft are also limited to one local flight, and practice approaches during daylight hours on weekdays are not authorized due to local air traffic volume. IFR arrivals and departures can expect delays when the adjacent restricted area is active.
Moody AFB (KVAD) performs customs processing for military personnel and assets only, per the airport's operational remarks. The nearest civilian customs facility is located at Jacksonville International, approximately 82.74 nautical miles away. Dispatchers arranging international transient stops requiring civilian customs clearance should plan accordingly, as this service is not available onsite at KVAD.
