Landing essentials
Whether you can land, whether you can refuel, and how customs works here.
Overview
Langley AFB (KLFI) is a military airfield in Hampton, Virginia, operating under a single 10,002-foot concrete runway rated for large aircraft. As a private-use, tower-controlled installation, access is governed by prior permission requirements rather than open civilian scheduling. The field sits within a short distance of several other regional airports, including Newport News / Williamsburg International, and shares airspace considerations with nearby NASA Langley Research Center operations. Customs processing is not available onsite; the nearest customs airport is Newport News / Williamsburg International (KPHF), about 7 nautical miles away. Business aviation traffic recorded at KLFI in 2025, per FAA TFMSC data, reflects cross-border activity as tracked by the FAA rather than the airfield's total operations.

Langley AFB Airport has published operating constraints in seven categories: access, weight restrictions, runway notes, emergency arresting systems, noise procedures, pavement strength and other notes.
Restricted: prior permission required; contact Base Operations, available 1030-0430Z++. PPR is valid within one hour of the approved time during airfield operating hours; if arriving outside the approved time slot, contact Base Ops to update the PPR. Only one fixed-wing aircraft is authorized between 1300 and 1400Z++. Transport and distinguished visitor aircraft should contact Base Ops 20 minutes prior to landing.
Caution: wind shear conditions may exist on Runway 26 through short final and touchdown; these conditions are prevalent, undetectable, and often unreported. There is increased potential for hydroplaning due to excessive rubber build-up. The approach light system is non-frangible. Airfield grass cutting is conducted March through November, with increased bird activity expected near the mowers.
Miscellaneous: transient aircraft should notify the tower on initial contact if reduced runway separation is not desired. Airfield Operations does not have COMSEC or facilities to store it for transient crews; transient crews should plan to arrive with the appropriate amount of COMSEC to complete their mission. COMSEC can be stored at the 1st Fighter Wing Command Post.
Operating hours are 1100-0300Z++ Monday through Friday, with weekends open once a month to support Regular Scheduled Drill/Guard weekend activity; closed on federal holidays and ACC down days unless operations are approved by the 1st Fighter Wing Commander. Contact Command Post outside of operating hours.
Restricted: V/STOL aircraft, vertical takeoff, vertical low approach, and vertical landing are prohibited at the airfield.
Taxiway J is restricted to aircraft with a total wingspan of 80 feet or less and a gross weight of 100,000 pounds or less.
Weight-bearing waivers should be directed to the Airfield Manager.
Runway 08/26 threshold lights are gated; the middle 70 feet of lighting is inoperative or has been removed.
Caution: instrument IFR and VFR high-performance fighter traffic operates within the Class D airspace, with extensive uncontrolled general aviation traffic below 3,000 feet over the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Departing traffic should not exceed 1,000 feet on climbout until past the departure end of the runway.
Caution: the weather observation site is located between the 080 and 250 degree radials due to an obstructing building.
Traffic pattern: overhead at 3,000 feet at 5 DME, descending to 1,500 feet by 3 DME, with a right break for Runway 26 and a left break for Runway 08. Rectangular pattern at 1,000 feet, right traffic for Runway 26, left traffic for Runway 08.
Miscellaneous: contact Airfield Operations or the Airfield Manager. DD Form 1801 is required 90 minutes prior to estimated time of departure. Runway 08/26 is grooved. ACC fighter aircraft can expect reduced runway separation: day/VFR similar aircraft types at 3,000 feet, dissimilar aircraft types at 6,000 feet; at night, 6,000 feet applies to all aircraft.
BAK-15(NI) arresting system with a 60-foot overrun, and a BAK-12B(B) hook cable located 1,100 feet down the runway.
BAK-12B(B) hook cable located 1,002 feet down the runway, and a BAK-15(NI) arresting system with a 44-foot overrun.
Arresting gear: the BAK-15 cable is always in place on the Runway 26 overrun, with the net raised at pilot request. The BAK-12B(B) pendant cable is always in place, with a BAK-12B extension.
Arresting gear out of service for maintenance: the east BAK-12 on Tuesdays 1030-1130Z++, and the west BAK-12 on Wednesdays 1030-1130Z++.
Noise abatement: quiet hours are 0330-1100Z++ on weekdays and 0330-1300Z++ on weekends and holidays; waivers are handled by contacting Command Post.
NASA: aircraft intending to operate from the NASA ramp must contact NASA Flight Operations by email to arrange approval and support prior to arrival, and must also obtain PPR from the 1st Operations Support Squadron for landing at KLFI. This service is not available for non-NASA aircraft, and there is no organic support for large transport category aircraft (power, fuel, lavatory, steps), though USAF elements may be able to provide support with sufficient advance notice. Taxiway Juliet has increased FOD hazard and reduced pavement classification due to degrading pavement conditions; aircraft with an ACN greater than 24 or wingspan greater than 80 feet should use Taxiway H instead, which is also limited at night and in IFR conditions due to lack of taxiway edge lighting. Control of perimeter road street lights to stop vehicular traffic is three clicks on 123.375 for Taxiway J and five clicks for Taxiway H; only NASA BE200, T38, OV10, and T34 aircraft may operate on Taxiway J.
Fuel is available around the clock; expect up to a 30-minute delay.
Oil grades available: O-133-148-156, SOAP tested.
Transient alert operates 1130-0430Z++ on weekdays and is closed on weekends, holidays, and ACC down days. Expect progressive taxi to parking. Follow-me service is available on request.
Caution: laser light beam direct visual observation hazard will be conducted at NASA Langley Research Center, within a half-nautical-mile radius of 37 degrees 06.3 minutes North, 76 degrees 22.7 minutes West. Strong caution is advised, as the laser beam may be injurious to pilot and passenger eyes at all altitudes near the light source. Check NOTAMs for date, time, duration, and affected altitude.
Parking, refueling, and maintenance are available on the Air Force ramp. Aircraft carrying firearms should call the base Police to arrange for security.
Weather service: the alternate PMSV facility is McGuire AFB on 239.8; weather service is available around the clock. An AN/FMQ-19 automated observing system is in use, augmented by human observation when necessary. During weather flight closure or evacuation, remote briefing service is available from the 15th Operational Weather Squadron at Scott AFB.
Caution: ATC will relay tower prevailing visibility, sector visibility, local pilot reports, or any previously unreported weather condition that could affect the weather flight.
Restricted: ACC restrictions apply only to ACC aircraft.
Caution: use extreme caution for unmanned aircraft system operations at NASA Langley Research Center, from the surface to 400 feet, within a half-nautical-mile radius of 37 degrees 06.07.51 North, 76 degrees 23.13.88 West.
Miscellaneous: towing capabilities are limited to a universal towbar only.
Caution: BASH Phase I is in effect November 16 through February 14 and April 1 through September 14. BASH Phase II is in effect February 15 through March 31 and September 15 through November 15. Contact Base Operations for current BASH conditions.
Remarks: communication with NASA Operations is handled through NASA's unmonitored telephone line.

Langley AFB (KLFI) is a military airfield with a PPR requirement, so it is not accessible for routine civilian use. Transient aircraft must contact Base Operations to arrange approval, and only one fixed-wing aircraft is authorized between 1300 and 1400Z++. Transport and distinguished visitor aircraft must contact Base Ops shortly before landing. Access outside approved time slots requires an updated PPR.
Taxiway J at Langley AFB is limited to aircraft with a wingspan of 80 feet or less and a gross weight of 100,000 pounds or less. It also lacks edge lighting, which limits its use at night and in IFR conditions. Aircraft with an ACN greater than 24 or a wingspan over 80 feet are directed to use Taxiway H instead.
Langley AFB operates 1100-0300Z++ Monday through Friday, with weekend hours available once a month to support Regular Scheduled Drill or Guard weekend activity. The field is closed on federal holidays and ACC down days unless operations are approved by the 1 FW Commander. Outside published hours, aircrews should contact Command Post for support.
Langley AFB sits near the NASA Langley Research Center, where laser light beam observation activity occurs within a half-mile radius of a charted point and can pose a hazard to direct visual observation. Pilots should check NOTAMs for the date, time, duration, and affected altitude of these events. Separately, BASH (Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard) Phase I and Phase II periods run across most of the year, and current bird activity conditions can be obtained from Base Ops.
