Overview

Hunter AAF, identified as KSVN, is a towered military airfield in Savannah, Georgia, operating under private use with CBP inspection services available onsite. FAA TFMSC data for 2025 places the field at ops tier 1, with business aviation traffic making up a substantial share of the 2,341 annual operations recorded. The single 11,375-foot asphalt runway and proximity to Savannah / Hilton Head International, roughly 7.6 nautical miles away, position Hunter AAF as a long-runway option in the region, subject to the prior-permission and military access rules that govern the field.

Operating constraints

Hunter Aaf Airport has published operating constraints in five categories: access, runway notes, noise procedures, environmental and other notes.

Access

Approach lighting system activated for runway 10; 3-step approach lighting system for runway 28; REIL on runway 10; PAPI on runways 10 and 28; high-intensity runway lighting on runway 10/28. Use CTAF when the tower is closed.

Fuel available is Jet A++. Transient fuel requires prior permission; contact base operations by DSN or commercial line. Transient aircraft may experience delay due to operational mission priorities.

Caution: taxiway 7 East/West is closed. No rotary-wing hovering on the west ramp without prior permission.

The airfield is closed from 0400Z Saturday through 1230Z Monday to transient fixed-wing aircraft, except for official business only. Prior permission is required for all transient aircraft, including touch-and-go operations; contact base operations by DSN or commercial line.

Runway notes

Full weather service operates 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, from 0300Z Monday through 0400Z Saturday, excluding holidays, reachable by DSN or commercial line. Outside those hours, remote briefing is available from the 26th Operational Weather Squadron at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, by commercial line. The primary weather sensor in use is the AN/FMQ-19, operating automated full time and augmented as required. During augmentation periods, air traffic control assists in cooperative watch by notifying weather personnel of unreported weather conditions. During augmentation or back-up mode, prevailing surface visibility may not represent the entire airfield from 280 to 090 degrees due to building obstructions and lack of visibility markers beyond one-quarter statute mile. A part-time meteorological service is available during operating hours.

Noise procedures

Noise abatement procedures are in effect from 0300Z to 1200Z or later Monday through Saturday, and from 0300Z to 1800Z or later on Sunday. Practice multiple circling approaches for categories C, D, and E are not authorized below 1500 feet. No overflight of Savannah and surrounding populated areas below 1000 feet is permitted unless on approach to Hunter AAF. Quiet hours are 0230 to 1030Z or later.

Environmental

Caution: wildlife hazard present, including a seagull hazard.

Other notes

Arrangements are made by contacting base operations.

JASU equipment available: three AF M32A-86 units, three DND CE12 equivalent units, one DND CE14 equivalent unit, and one AF M32-95 unit.

Transient alert service is limited and available from 1230Z to 0400Z or later, Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays.

Traffic pattern altitude is 1500 feet for fixed-wing aircraft and 700 feet for rotary-wing aircraft.

Pilots planning to conduct operations within restricted area R3005 must receive a range briefing prior to operating. The briefing must be completed at least 4 hours prior to flight on the reservation. Aviators briefed within the past 6 months may receive a phone update instead.

For briefing coordination, contact the applicable office, available 1300 to 2100Z Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Base operations operate 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, from 1200Z Monday through 0400Z Saturday, excluding holidays. The weather observer operates from 1230Z Monday through 0400Z Saturday, excluding holidays. No emergency services are available when the tower and base operations are closed.

Frequently asked questions

What is Hunter AAF (KSVN) and who can operate there?

Hunter AAF, identifier KSVN, is a military airfield in Savannah, Georgia, classified as a private-use facility rather than a public airport. It operates under a control tower and is tracked at ops tier 1 by FAA TFMSC data, reflecting significant traffic volume. Transient civilian aircraft require prior permission before arrival, and access is coordinated through base operations rather than a commercial FBO. Use type restrictions mean this field is not a default alternate for general aviation flights without prior coordination. Dispatchers should treat any planned stop at KSVN as requiring advance approval.

Does KSVN have customs processing onsite?

Hunter AAF shows customs_onsite as true, with CBP inspection services available at the field. Because KSVN sits in the United States, this reflects standard CBP clearance capability rather than the restricted regimes seen at some Canadian or Mexican military strips. This makes the airfield usable for international arrivals requiring federal inspection, subject to the airfield's own prior-permission and military-access rules. Crews should still confirm CBP officer availability and base operations approval before filing an international leg into KSVN, since customs presence does not override the field's transient aircraft restrictions.

What fuel is available at Hunter AAF and are there restrictions?

Hunter AAF stocks Jet A++ fuel, confirmed in the airport data as the sole fuel type on the field. Transient fuel service requires prior permission, coordinated through base operations, and transient aircraft may experience delay due to operational mission priorities on the field. This is a military airfield, so fuel uplift is subject to operational tempo rather than a fixed commercial schedule. Flight departments planning a fuel stop at KSVN should build schedule flexibility into their planning and confirm base ops approval well ahead of arrival.

How long is the runway at KSVN and what surface does it have?

Hunter AAF has a single runway, 10/28, measuring 11,375 feet long and 197 feet wide with an asphalt surface. This is also listed as the airport's max paved length, making it a long, wide strip capable of handling large military and civilian transport aircraft. The runway is equipped with an approach lighting system, REIL on runway 10, PAPI on both ends, and high-intensity runway lighting, with pilots reverting to CTAF procedures when the tower is closed. The scale of this runway reflects the field's role supporting military airlift and training operations at Savannah.

Is transient traffic restricted at Hunter AAF on weekends?

Yes, Hunter AAF closes the airfield to transient fixed-wing aircraft from 0400Z Saturday through 1230Z Monday, except for official business. Prior permission is required for all transient aircraft during operating periods, including touch-and-go operations, and this must be coordinated through base operations in advance. Outside these weekend closure windows, limited transient alert service is also only available Monday through Saturday during set hours, excluding holidays. No emergency services are available when the tower and base operations are closed. Flight planners working with KSVN need to build these access windows into any weekend routing.
