Operating constraints

Access

When the airport traffic control tower is closed, landing on runway 26 or departing on runway 08 is possible, but tall vessels may cross the runway 26 approach between 3,200 and 5,000 feet from the approach end. Ships up to 120 feet cross the channel between Puffin Island and the airport at all hours.

Mountainous terrain affects the approach; use is recommended only for pilots familiar with the area. Heavy lift cargo operations are restricted from full power takeoff without prior permission from the airport manager.

Prior permission is required, with lead time, for aircraft to access the Coast Guard ramp. Transient aircraft must provide their own service and maintenance crew. Expect delay outside that lead time except for search and rescue and medevac operations; contact the airport for details.

The Coast Guard ramp is closed to aircraft with a wingspan greater than 132.5 feet.

Weight restrictions

Prior permission is required for all operations exceeding 200,000 pounds gross takeoff or landing weight.

Runway notes

Pilot-activated REIL on runway 01 and runway 26. VASI on runway 01, runway 26, and runway 29. HIRL on runway 01/19, runway 08/26, and runway 11/29. Taxiway lights are activated via CTAF.

A 7-foot blast barrier is located 40 feet from the threshold; a highway is located 60 feet from the threshold.

The runway 01 VASI does not provide obstacle clearance beyond 2.0 nautical miles from the threshold and is unusable beyond that distance.

Approach ratio is 2:1 to the displaced threshold.

The first 3,000 feet of runway 08, the first 2,000 feet of runway 01, and portions of all taxiways are not visible from the air traffic control tower.

A road lies within 50 feet of the threshold on all runways.

Landing on runway 08 and runway 11, and takeoff on runway 26 and runway 29, are not recommended during darkness or when mountain peaks are obscured.

Personnel and equipment are working on and in the vicinity of the runway.

On arrival, contact Kodiak Air on frequency 345.0 or 164.55 for clearance onto the Coast Guard ramp, for a marshaller, and for parking service. The taxi route to the Coast Guard ramp crosses two roads; activate the crossing lights on frequency 122.8 with five clicks to turn on and seven clicks to turn off. Taxi line obstruction clearance on the Coast Guard ramp is nonstandard.

Environmental

Unlighted high terrain surrounds the airport in all quadrants. Birds, waterfowl, and wildlife are present on and in the vicinity of the airport.
