Landing essentials
Whether you can land, whether you can refuel, and how customs works here.
Overview
Seymour Johnson AFB (KGSB) is a military installation in Goldsboro, North Carolina, with private use status and a single runway long enough for the heaviest transport and tanker aircraft. Access for transient traffic is restricted and coordinated through base operations, and prior permission is required for all arrivals regardless of affiliation. Customs support is limited and requires prior coordination, with the nearest full customs facility at KRDU roughly 52 nautical miles away. Business aviation activity is small relative to the base's total operations tempo, consistent with its role as an active Air Force facility rather than a civilian gateway.
Seymour Johnson AFB Airport has one paved runway, 08/26, 11,760 ft long and 300 ft wide, with a concrete surface.

Seymour Johnson AFB Airport recorded 37 business aviation movements in 2025. Traffic peaks in September. Business aviation traffic at KGSB is concentrated in a handful of months, with September, May, and March recording the highest counts against near-zero activity in February, April, and October.

Seymour Johnson AFB Airport has published operating constraints in six categories: access, runway notes, emergency arresting systems, noise procedures, environmental and other notes.
Fluid services: self-propelled pressure air and liquid oxygen are available, with 24-hour prior permission required.
Restriction: transient aircraft should expect a full stop landing during local flying periods. Contact airfield management operations seven days prior for prior permission and purpose of flight notification. Taxiway A is closed to C-5 aircraft east of taxiway G. Taxiway F is available for aircraft with wingspans of 44 feet or less; coordinate with the airfield manager for larger aircraft.
Caution: trees are located 3,000 feet east of the runway 26 approach end.
Restriction: prior permission is required for all aircraft, including those carrying distinguished visitors, hazardous cargo, and air evacuation missions, regardless of affiliation, for notification and coordination purposes.
Restriction: an issued prior permission request is valid only within 30 minutes before or after the estimated time of arrival. Early or late arrivals and departures must be recoordinated.
Runway 08/26 has variable pavement composition: from the runway 26 threshold, the first 1,000 feet by 300 feet is concrete. From 1,000 feet to 3,100 feet, the surface is 150 feet wide concrete with 75 feet of asphalt on each side. From 3,100 feet to 10,760 feet, the surface is 75 feet wide concrete with 112.5 feet of asphalt on each side. From 10,760 feet to 11,760 feet, the surface is 300 feet wide concrete. There are no shoulders on the runway. Runway lights run along the usable pavement.
Lighting: Runway 08-26 has 70-foot gated threshold lights.
Runway condition reading and runway surface condition are not reported by Seymour Johnson base weather.
Apron flood lights are located 1,402 feet from the runway centerline at the southern corners of the tanker ramp. One is located at the southwest corner at a height of 102 feet above mean sea level, and the other is located at the southeast corner at a height of 101 feet above mean sea level.
Arresting hook cable BAK-12A(B) is located 36 feet into the overrun; arresting hook cable BAK-12B(B) is located 1,490 feet down the runway.
Arresting hook cable BAK-12B(B) is located 1,490 feet down the runway; arresting hook cable BAK-12A(B) is located 52 feet into the overrun.
Arresting gear: BAK-12B(B) is always in place. There is potential for tail hook slip due to the concrete inlay meeting asphalt pavement at the runway 26 underrun and runway 08 overrun BAK-12 barrier location.
Noise abatement quiet hours are in effect from 0330 to 1100Z. Contact base operations for further information.
Caution: heavy bird activity, including blackbirds, should be expected during summer and fall.
Oil: grade O-148, spectrometric oil analysis program applies.
Transient alert services are available from 1200 to 0400Z Monday through Friday and 1530 to 2300Z Saturday and Sunday, with standby coverage all other times. Service or refueling delays of one to two hours can be expected on weekends, holidays, peak periods, and during limited maintenance. Limited fleet servicing is available for military aircraft only. A 50-gallon lavatory cart is supplied to aircrew to service aircraft.
Customs, agriculture, and immigration: limited customs support is available, and prior coordination is required. Facilities for handling contaminated agricultural waste are limited.
All inbound aircraft carrying VIPs should contact the consolidated command post when 60 nautical miles out.
Heavy aircraft landing long over the BAK-12 barriers, if unable to comply, should contact airfield management operations 30 minutes prior.
Non-standard markings exist on the hot cargo pad for a motorcycle safety course. The markings are contained within a 120 foot by 220 foot box located south of the taxi line, using a yellow and white paint scheme.
Weather forecaster support is available from 0300 to 0400Z Monday through Friday, with variations determined by the 916th Air Refueling Wing and 4th Fighter Wing operating hours, which may vary with the local flying schedule. Remote briefing service is available from the 26th Operational Weather Squadron at Barksdale AFB. Weather observations are available 24 hours via an AN/FMQ-19 automated observation system, augmented by human observation during operating hours.
Caution: C-5 aircraft should expect a reduced level of service.
Taxiway F is not available for aircraft larger than a C-130.
UHF-equipped aircraft should use UHF as the primary air traffic control frequency when arriving at or departing from Seymour Johnson.
Communications security storage is located at the command post.
Caution: there is potential for small unmanned aircraft system activity outside of airfield operating hours.

Yes, all aircraft arriving at Seymour Johnson AFB (KGSB) need prior permission regardless of affiliation, including aircraft carrying VIPs, hazardous cargo, or air evacuation missions. Requests should be coordinated with base operations seven days ahead, and an issued PPR is only valid within a 30-minute window around the estimated arrival time. Early or late arrivals and departures must be recoordinated with base operations.
Runway 08/26 at Seymour Johnson AFB (KGSB) is 11,760 feet long and 300 feet wide with a concrete surface, making it one of the longer runways available to transient military and cargo traffic. The pavement width and construction vary along its length, narrowing in sections with asphalt shoulders before widening back to the full 300 feet near the runway ends. There are no shoulders reported along the runway itself.
Customs support at Seymour Johnson AFB (KGSB) is limited and requires prior coordination rather than being available on demand. The nearest full customs facility is KRDU, located about 52 nautical miles away. Facilities for handling contaminated agricultural waste are also limited at the base, so operators should plan clearance and any related agricultural inspection needs well in advance.
Seymour Johnson AFB (KGSB) offers Jet A fuel, with the fuel farm attended during the published schedule from 1200 to 0400Z on all days. Outside of standby coverage windows, service delays of one to two hours can occur on weekends, holidays, and peak periods, and limited fleet servicing is available only for military aircraft. A 50-gallon lavatory cart is supplied to aircrew for servicing aircraft.
