Landing essentials

Whether you can land, whether you can refuel, and how customs works here.

Overview

Michael Army Airfield, known as KDPG, serves the Dugway Proving Ground military installation in Utah at an elevation of 4,350 feet. The field is private-use with a single long paved runway suited to military and government aircraft, and it operates on a limited attendance schedule rather than continuous coverage. Access is restricted, with prior permission required for landing and fuel, and the nearest customs point lies at Salt Lake City International, about 56 nautical miles distant. Given its role supporting testing operations, traffic at KDPG is light and dominated by government and military movements rather than general business aviation.

Operating constraints

Michael Aaf (dugway Proving Ground) Airport has published operating constraints in four categories: access, runway notes, environmental and other notes.

Access

Restricted: 24-hour prior permission is required for landing and for fuel. Contact Base Operations. USAF, ANG, and AFRES AMC aircraft should consult the ASRR for this location.

Runway notes

PAPI is activated for runway 12 and runway 30. HIRL is active for runway 12/30. Taxiway lights are pilot-controlled on CTAF.

Runway 12R-30L is closed.

Caution: landing short of the runway 30 threshold is a significant hazard. The E-5 barrier protrudes several inches above the ground. Aircraft contact with the barrier short of the runway threshold can cause damage to the barrier and substantial damage to the aircraft.

The runway 12 clear zone contains a non-frangible fence, 375 feet wide. Taxiway A has a 9-foot fence 140 feet from the west end of the taxiway, and wing walkers may be required. Taxiway B edge markings are unmarked. Runway 12/30 edges are unmarked.

Environmental

Caution: wild animals may cross the runway, and there is a foreign object damage hazard during high wind conditions. Bird activity monitoring is available on request.

Other notes

The northwest first 5,000 feet of HIRL is out of service indefinitely.

Fuel is available, coded A++. An aircard is required, and communications are required for access.

Transient alert operates 1400-0030Z, Monday through Thursday, except holidays.

See the FLIP AP/1 supplementary airport remarks for additional information.

Caution: limited aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) capability exists for manned aircraft. Call Base Operations for information.

For clearance delivery, contact Clover Control or use VHF 134.1.

Frequently asked questions

Is fuel available at KDPG (Michael AAF)?

Fuel is listed at KDPG (Michael AAF, Dugway Proving Ground), coded A++, but it requires an aircard with communications capability to access. Landing and fuel service also fall under a 24-hour prior permission required policy, so crews should coordinate with Base Ops before planning a stop. This is a restricted military field, not a public FBO location.

What restrictions apply to using KDPG?

KDPG (Michael AAF) is a private-use military airfield at Dugway Proving Ground, and landing plus fuel service require 24-hour prior permission from Base Ops. USAF, ANG, and AFRES AMC aircraft are directed to consult the ASRR for this location before planning operations. There is no listed customs processing onsite, with Salt Lake City International roughly 56 nautical miles away as the nearest customs point.

What is the runway configuration at KDPG?

KDPG operates a single paved runway, 12/30, measuring 10,999 feet long and 150 feet wide with an asphalt surface. A parallel runway, 12R-30L, is listed as closed. The northwest first 5,000 feet of high-intensity runway lighting is out of service indefinitely, which is a factor for night operations planning.

How busy is traffic at Dugway Proving Ground (KDPG)?

Dugway Proving Ground (KDPG) recorded 95 total annual operations in 2025 according to FAA TFMSC data, with 19 of those classified as business aviation activity. Monthly business aviation counts were low and uneven throughout the year, with several months showing zero recorded operations and a peak of 6 in September. This reflects the field's restricted military use rather than routine civil traffic patterns.
