Operating constraints

Buckley Space Force Base has published operating constraints in six categories: access, runway notes, emergency arresting systems, noise procedures, environmental and other notes.

Access

Restricted: prior permission required for all aircraft except base-assigned traffic; contact Base Operations. Minimum 24-hour notice is required, and requests must be submitted no more than 7 days before arrival. Transient aircraft VFR pattern work is limited to a single practice approach followed by a full-stop landing. Multiple VFR practice approaches are not authorized for aircraft not landing at Buckley. Transient aircraft may be required to fly a straight-in full stop. C-5, C-17, KC-10, F-4, EA-6, and F-14 aircraft must start run-up 300 feet down the runway prior to takeoff to prevent asphalt and lighting system damage.

Restricted: taxiway L is closed to all transient aircraft.

An aerodrome construction area is located on the west side of the runway 32 threshold, approximately 500 feet from the runway edge; non-frangible concrete scraps are located in the vicinity.

Runway notes

Caution: heavy commercial traffic on Denver International runway 35's ILS course between 6,500 feet and 12,000 feet, 2 nautical miles east of Buckley. Heavy uncontrolled general aviation traffic arrives from Centennial, 9 nautical miles southwest. Traffic is concentrated from the surface to 10,000 feet south, southeast, and east of Buckley's Class D airspace.

Bearing strength runway 14-32: T140, ST175, TT280.

The first 3,836 feet of runway 14 and the first 1,710 feet of runway 32 are concrete; the middle 5,460 feet of runway 14-32 is asphalt. Four-engine aircraft must taxi using inboard engines only prior to departure and after landing for FOD control.

Lighting: runway 32 ILS glideslope/RPI and PAPI glideslope/RRP are not coincidental.

Large and heavy aircraft must make U-turns on the runway, using left turns at the runway end on the concrete portion. Avoid overflying radar domes northwest of runway 14-32.

A landing illusion exists on short final for runway 14. Terrain rises short of the threshold then descends for 2,000 feet, creating an illusion of the aircraft being high on final with excessive ground rush. Extra caution should be used during night landings.

An unlit obstacle is located southwest of runway 32.

Emergency arresting systems

Arresting gear: MB-100(B) hook with 35-foot overrun, and a Type-H BAK-12B(B) system located 1,500 feet down the runway.

Noise procedures

Traffic pattern: runway 32 uses left traffic, runway 14 uses right traffic, with an overhead break at 7,200 feet. Fighter aircraft should expect closed traffic and an overhead pattern east of Buckley for noise avoidance.

Environmental

Caution: high mid-air collision potential; extreme vigilance is required. Heavy bird activity during peak migration periods (BASH Phase II, March through May and October through November) may pose a hazard to aircraft, especially during morning and evening hours. All other months are BASH Phase I. Contact ATIS or the tower for current bird watch condition. A possible crosswind hazard exists on runway 14/32. An unlit fence surrounds the airfield.

Restricted: airfield access limited to base-assigned aircraft from 0530-1330Z++ Tuesday through Saturday and 2300-1500Z++ Sunday and Monday.

Restricted: aircraft must adhere to a prior-permission arrival block within plus or minus 30 minutes of scheduled landing time.

Customs, agriculture, and immigration services are limited to 140th Wing aircraft and AMC aircraft supporting the 140th Wing mission only.

Transient alert operates 1230-0230Z++ Tuesday through Friday and is closed Saturday through Monday. Aircraft deicing equipment is not available.
